In a significant move, the Union Cabinet has given its nod to a substantial reduction in LPG prices as part of the Ujjwala Scheme. The latest decision, announced during a recent cabinet meeting, entails a ₹200 reduction in the cost of cooking gas cylinders for all domestic consumers. This initiative is in line with the government’s commitment to making clean cooking fuel more affordable and accessible to households across the country.
Under the revised Ujjwala scheme, the subsidy for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries will now stand at ₹400 per cylinder, effectively reducing the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder to ₹703 for these recipients. This move is aimed at providing much-needed relief to households, especially during occasions like Raksha Bandhan and Onam, symbolizing a thoughtful gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the women of India.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his appreciation for this gesture by stating, “PM Modi has decided ₹200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders, for all users…this is a gift from PM Narendra Modi, to the women of the country, during the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam.”
The Ujjwala scheme, initiated in 2016, has made remarkable progress since its inception. At the time when the current government took office in 2014, only 14.5 crore citizens had access to domestic LPG connections. Today, that number has significantly increased to 33 crore, with a remarkable 9.6 crore connections being distributed under the Ujjwala scheme alone.
Free gas connections to 75 lakh women
Adding to the benefits, the government has also announced a plan to provide free gas connections to 75 lakh women on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam. This initiative will include a gas burner, the first cooking gas cylinder, and the necessary pipe, ensuring a seamless transition to clean cooking fuel. With this move, the total beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme will reach an impressive 10.35 crore.
The decision has garnered praise from various quarters, including JP Nadda, the BJP president, who expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the price cut. He stated, “Now Ujjwala beneficiaries will get LPG at ₹700 and all other consumers will get LPG at ₹900. Modi ji’s gift to our women power on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan.”
This move not only underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the lives of its citizens but also reflects its dedication to achieving cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions for households across the nation.
