However, with the rapidly changing climate, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine a future where Kolkata experiences a prolonged winter season, complete with snow-covered streets and a winter wonderland-like atmosphere.
Using climate modeling and projections, we’ve calculated that by the year 2087, Kolkata will experience a significant shift in its climate, with winters lasting around 8 months. This dramatic change will bring snowfall to the city, transforming its iconic landmarks and streets into a breathtaking winter wonderland.
Imagine strolling through the historic Esplanade, surrounded by snow-covered colonial-era buildings, their grandeur and beauty amplified by the serene silence of the snow. The usually bustling streets will be filled with the soft crunch of snow underfoot, as people bundle up to take in the sights and sounds of this winter wonderland.
Camac Street, once a hub of activity, will be transformed into a snow-lined promenade, with the sound of laughter and joy filling the air as people build snowmen and engage in snowball fights. The usually vibrant street food stalls will be replaced by warm and cozy cafes, serving hot chocolate and traditional Bengali delicacies to keep the chill at bay.
Victoria Memorial, a stunning example of British colonial architecture, will be surrounded by a blanket of snow, its grandeur and beauty enhanced by the serene silence of the winter landscape. The memorial’s reflecting pool will be frozen, creating a natural ice skating rink for visitors to enjoy.
Netaji Subhas Bose International Airport will also undergo a transformation, with snow-covered runways and a winter wonderland-themed terminal building. Passengers will be greeted with hot cups of chai and warm smiles as they arrive in this winter wonderland.
