The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of its ambitious mission, Aditya-L1. It is launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Aditya-L1 is India’s first solar mission. It was carried into orbit by the PSLV-C57 rocket, which placed the satellite precisely into its intended orbit.

Aditya-L1, weighing approximately 1,480.7 kg, is a groundbreaking space-based observatory designed to study the Sun. The spacecraft will embark on a journey lasting approximately 125 days to reach the Halo orbit . It is around the Lagrangian Point L1, point considered closest to our star, the Sun.

Leaders from across the political spectrum have congratulated and praised the ISRO team for their tireless efforts. Prime Minister Modi noted that these endeavors will contribute to a better understanding of the Universe.

It’s important to note that Aditya-L1 will not land on the Sun or approach it any closer. Instead, it will focus on studying the Sun’s outer atmosphere, conducting research on coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), dynamics of the solar atmosphere, and temperature anisotropy.

Named after the Hindi word for the Sun, the Aditya-L1 spacecraft will cover a distance of approximately 1.5 million km over four months to reach its destination. The mission plan involves reaching a specific region in space known as Lagrange Point, which is characterized by balancing gravitational forces. This unique location minimizes fuel consumption for the spacecraft.

Upon arriving at Lagrange Point L1, Aditya-L1 will undergo another maneuver to be bound to an orbit around this point. Lagrange Points are gravitational sweet spots located between Earth and the Sun, where objects tend to remain stationary due to the equilibrium of gravitational forces.

Throughout its mission, which is expected to span five years, the spacecraft will orbit around L1 in an irregularly shaped path, perpendicular to the line connecting Earth and the Sun, allowing for comprehensive scientific observations.

ISRO’s successful launch of Aditya-L1 marks a significant achievement in solar research and space exploration. The data and insights gathered by this mission will contribute to our understanding of the Sun’s behavior and its impact on our solar system, advancing our knowledge of the cosmos.
